Overview
SUNY Oneonta’s History curriculum is extensive and versatile. Organized around the idea that all areas of the globe have significant pasts worthy of attention, the major is structured so that you can choose a primary and secondary area of study. With approximately 90 majors and 11 full-time faculty members, the program offers a rich and diverse learning experience in an intimate setting. Our upper-level courses are small (typically 25 students).

Hands-On Learning
You'll have many opportunities to learn by doing. Our internship program offers work experiences in museums, archives and historical sites. A research assistantship program – where students work one-on-one with a faculty member – is also available, and a number of students are research assistants for New York History, a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal edited by SUNY Oneonta faculty in partnership with the New York State Historical Association.

Field Courses and Lectures

Senior Thesis
You’ll also have the option to write a senior thesis. Students choosing this option often apply for student research grants and do archival research outside of Oneonta. When completed, students defend their thesis before a panel of professors. Recent thesis topics include: African American History in early 19th century New York City, the History of Crime in 19th Century New York City, Islamic Medieval Medicine and Social Policy in Interwar Hong Kong.

Education Program
Many students planning to become social studies teachers complete a dual major in History and Adolescence Education: Social Studies.
