Overview

Earth Science is the study of the materials, processes and evolution of the Earth’s global systems—air, water, ice, minerals, rocks and fossils—and the interactions of these complex systems. Our Earth Science program introduces you to these concepts and the ever-increasing impact of human activities on Earth. You’ll take courses in a variety of science and math disciplines and develop problem-solving, communication and information-processing skills.

Earth Science Education

This major is most commonly pursued as a dual major with Adolescence Education Earth Science, a comprehensive program that prepares you to teach Earth Science at the middle or high school  level.

Hands-On Learning

Outside of the classroom, Earth Science majors do research projects with faculty, travel to field sites and national parks in the American West, participate in academic conferences, attend department seminars and workshops, and get involved in a variety of student clubs. Every year, alumni of the program return to campus to network with students at the Earth Science Majors Night, where several scholarship awards are presented.
